Find Federal BOP Releases

To find someone released from a Federal Bureau of Prisons institution after a Nicholas County connection, first confirm that the custody episode came from a federal case. A local arrest does not by itself place a person in the federal prison system, and no federal prison is identified in Nicholas County. Federal release verification pairs the national inmate result with the federal court record and, when necessary, the agency that handled pretrial transport or detention. The displayed status must be read narrowly because the end of federal prison custody may still be followed by supervision or another authority's custody.

Federal BOP Release Scope

The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates a nationwide prison system. The research identifies no BOP institution in Nicholas County. This path becomes relevant because the underlying case is federal, not because a federal agency, state officer, or county deputy happened to participate in an arrest. A person may also enter BOP records as a pretrial detainee, material witness, or civil-contempt detainee, so a locator entry alone does not prove a federal conviction.

CRJCF can house people connected to different authorities, but the facility's local release transaction does not settle federal status. A handoff to the U.S. Marshals Service or BOP continues custody. Conversely, a BOP result marked “RELEASED” means the person is no longer in BOP custody. It does not prove that federal supervised release ended or that no state, local, or immigration custodian took control.

Search a Nicholas Federal Release

Use the official BOP Inmate Locator. Its public coverage generally reaches federal inmates from 1982 forward. Earlier releases may require archival research. Search by BOP Register Number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number when available. A name search also permits identifying details. Number-based matching reduces the risk of confusing people with similar names.

  1. Confirm that the case or transfer was federal before opening the BOP route.
  2. Search by the strongest official number, or use the exact name with supported identifiers.
  3. Compare the name, Register Number, age, race, sex, location, and release date shown.
  4. Preserve the locator's exact status wording and the date of the search.
  5. Check the federal court docket or order for legal authority and any later supervision.
  6. Ask BOP or the relevant federal record custodian for an existing record if the public result is unclear.

The successful manifest capture below shows the BOP explanation of locator records and release fields.

Federal BOP Nicholas County release locator field guidance

That official guidance supports reading a future date, unknown term, transit status, and completed release as different facts rather than one generic release result.

Federal BOP Release Result Fields

BOP's result guide identifies name, Register Number, age, race, sex, Release Date, and Location as public result fields. Each has a limited purpose. A Register Number identifies the federal record. Location reports the current or reported placement. The Release Date may be actual or projected depending on whether it is past or future and how the status is displayed.

RELEASED
The person is no longer held in BOP custody.
Future Release Date
A projected date that may change through sentence recalculation.
UNKNOWN
The term of confinement is undetermined in the public result.
IN TRANSIT
The person is moving within federal custody; the final destination is not established.

BOP states that public release information can lag a recalculation required by law or policy. A projected date should be used for planning, not as proof that the person left. An actual past release entry is stronger, but it still answers only the BOP-custody question. The federal docket may show supervised release, probation, another detention order, or a later case.

Note: “Not in BOP custody” and “RELEASED” should not be expanded into a claim that no other agency has legal control.

Nicholas Federal Release Court Check

A federal court record supplies the legal trail that the BOP locator cannot. Depending on the case stage, it may contain a detention order, conditions of release, judgment, sentence, commitment, revocation, or a later modification. Pair the correct order with the BOP result. A pretrial release order differs from the completion of a prison term, and federal supervised release differs from parole under the West Virginia system.

The Nicholas County magistrate and circuit searches are not substitutes for a federal docket. They govern state and county matters. If a local record shows only an arrest or transport followed by a federal handoff, follow the receiving federal case. A local dismissal also does not prove the federal matter ended. Jurisdiction must follow the actual charge and custodian.

Use BOP only for a verified federal custody episode. A Nicholas County arrest, standing alone, is not a federal prison record.

The Nicholas County released-inmate search helps distinguish CRJCF, WVDCR prison, federal, and ICE systems before a name is treated as not found.

USMS and Federal Release Records

The U.S. Marshals Service manages federal prisoner transport and tracks people from arrest or remand through detention and disposition until commitment, release, or return to another authority. It does not provide a public historical release locator comparable to BOP's. For pretrial or transport custody, start with the federal court order and then seek a narrow existing USMS record if the order does not resolve the event.

A USMS handoff can explain a gap between local and BOP results. Someone released from CRJCF to the Marshals is not in the community merely because the state facility closes its record. The next record may be a temporary federal detention placement, transit entry, court production, or BOP commitment. Identify the receiving authority rather than guessing from a missing name.

The USMS FOIA page accepts requests for existing agency records. FOIA does not require the service to investigate a question, provide legal advice, or create a release account. Give the full name, identifiers, case, date range, and the specific transport or custody document sought.

Federal BOP Projected Release Dates

A future BOP Release Date is a projection. BOP warns that public dates can become outdated when a sentence is recalculated under law or policy. Court action, earned credit, disciplinary issues, or another correction to the sentence record can change the public value. The current BOP calculation and federal judgment are the proper sources; a state good-time rule or Nicholas regional-jail calculation cannot be imported into a federal sentence.

An actual past date paired with “RELEASED” is evidence that BOP custody ended. It should still be labeled as a BOP event. Federal supervised release may begin after prison, and another agency can assume custody. A court docket can show the term of supervision, revocation, or other later order that the locator does not explain.

When sources appear to conflict, compare the event names and update times. A court judgment can set the sentence while BOP calculates the projected end under federal law. A USMS transport record can fall between local custody and BOP intake. The locator then reports BOP status. Those records describe different parts of the same path rather than interchangeable release dates.

Verify a Federal BOP Discharge

A reliable Nicholas-connected federal release file uses at least two sources. The BOP result supplies the federal custody status and release date. The federal court record supplies the legal reason, sentence, and any supervision that follows. A USMS record may bridge a pretrial or transport gap. If state custody preceded the federal event, the CRJCF or WVDCR transfer entry establishes when the first agency surrendered control.

A number search is preferred when the official identifier is available. If only a name is known, compare every displayed identifier with the court file before choosing a result. Record the lookup date because a location, transit entry, projected date, or release label can later change. A saved observation should never be presented as more current than the source.

Names should be checked against the Register Number and other official identifiers. Preserve the exact event names. Do not call a future release date actual. Do not call IN TRANSIT release. Do not call the end of BOP custody the end of every legal obligation. These distinctions are especially important when a person has both Nicholas County and federal matters.

For records held by BOP, request the existing release or sentence-related document through its official process. Sensitive or exempt information may be withheld. Ask for reasonably separable parts and avoid private destination addresses or operational details. A focused personal or authorized request may also require identity verification under the agency's rules.

If the locator shows no match, review the custody class before assuming the search failed. The person may have remained in federal pretrial custody, returned to a state authority, used a different official name, or fallen outside the locator's normal date coverage. A federal docket and known Register Number can resolve scope. Repeating a name search cannot replace those records.

Note: Older federal releases outside normal locator coverage may require the National Archives rather than repeated searches of the current BOP database.
